Why this one divides people
Small talk exists to buy time while two strangers decide whether to bother. The job question dominates because it asks someone to summarise their life in a sentence, and half the room either dislikes their answer or cannot explain it. Yet a large group defends it, arguing that at least it goes somewhere, unlike the weather, which is a conversation with a ceiling roughly nine seconds high. The travel-here opener is oddly durable because everyone has a story. What people really object to is not the topic but the sense of a script being read at them.
