Why this one divides people
Long tables create a seating lottery nobody admits to playing. The far end is the classic complaint: you can see the good conversation happening, you simply cannot join it, and shouting across three place settings makes you the person shouting. Others insist proximity is worse than distance, because sitting beside someone at full volume means one conversation all night whether you wanted it or not. The middle of a bench has its own quiet horror, since leaving requires a small logistical operation. Where you land often decides how the whole evening felt, which nobody plans for.
