Drink pairings turn polite people combative. The usual complaint is about anything sweet and heavy enough to compete with the meal, which is why sugary and strongly flavoured drinks take most of the blame. Milk splits a room like nothing else: a large group finds it genuinely wrong beside savoury food, while another grew up with it on the table and cannot see any problem at all.
