Almost every popular holiday activity has a queue attached, and the queue is usually the reason people sour on it. Bus tours draw fire for turning a place into a window; you see everything and remember nothing. The famous viewpoint gets its own backlash because the photo already exists a million times over, and the walk up is rarely as good as the postcard. Souvenir stalls sell the same items in every port. Yet each of these has genuine defenders, usually people travelling with kids or with limited time, for whom the efficient version of a place is the only version available.
