Why this one divides people
Spring does not arrive on a date, it arrives on a feeling, and people locate that feeling differently. The most common marker is light: the first evening you notice it is still bright after work is more convincing than any calendar. Others insist it is behavioural, the first walk taken without a coat and the small gamble that goes with it. Gardeners and walkers point at blossom, the only sign you can photograph. Early risers name birdsong, which arrives weeks before anything looks different. And a cheerful group says spring begins the day chairs appear on pavements, which is really about other people.
