Why this one divides people
Cancelling is normal. How you cancel is character evidence. The two heavyweight offences are silence and timing, and people split almost evenly between them. Silence stings because you are left refreshing a screen, unsure whether to keep getting ready. Late notice stings because the evening is already spent: the table booked, the sitter paid, the plan unrepeatable. Softer options divide people too, especially the open-ended promise to reschedule that everybody understands is a polite ending. Cancelling by message barely registers as a crime any more, which tells you how far the etiquette has drifted in one generation.
